Grainstore, dlr’s Youth Arts Facility
The Grainstore is a Grade 1 listed building situated beside Cabinteely House and the Café, and was originally part of the Cabinteely House estate buildings. The Grainstore is owned and managed by Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and is open Monday to Saturday. The building has been transformed over the years through the influence of parents living in the area and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Parks Service into a local youth arts centre. In 2008 Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council assumed responsibility for managing the building. The Grainstore has continued to evolve and is now a vibrant, thriving hive of youth arts activities.
The Grainstore is an arts hub for children and young people. We exist to offer a space and resources where they can discover and grow their own creativity and influence our local culture as artists, programmers and curators. We value young people’s artistic ideas and voices and provide an environment where we can bring those ideas to life. The Grainstore is a place where children and young people can learn new skills, develop their confidence, find new forms of self-expression, collaborate with each other, and create new and exciting artworks that inspire and connect us.
What we do for children and young people
The Grainstore runs a youth arts programme with events, workshops and projects targeted specifically at young people aged 12 - 25 years from across Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County. As part of this, we host CANVAS, our youth arts committee, who are at the heart of our youth arts programme, and are a key influence in deciding what events and projects take place. CANVAS meets every Wednesday between 6 - 9pm.
“freedom, fun and friendship, self-expression and discovery, …a space to be creative, to learn, to discover, …a place where young people can express their talents"
(CANVAS members – on why the Grainstore is important to them)
The Grainstore also provides space for local arts companies who offer classes in art, dance, drama and music for children and young people. Our programming policy states that we only run or hire space for arts and creative activities for children and young people aged 2 - 25 years.
For further information on classes and our youth arts programme check out our News and What's On pages.
